Heart of Oak scholarship

Description:
The Heart of Oak Scholarship Fund, established in 1999, is offered annually to help pay for tuition and other hard costs of higher education. 

Availability:
One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded in 2008.

Eligibility:
The Heart of Oak Scholarship is intended to provide financial support to a student who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college or a vocational/technical institution. The Heart of Oak Scholarship is to be used as the principle scholarship awarded to the student, therefore, potential recipients should not be receiving any other scholarships of an equal or greater amount.

Candidates should be:

  • A resident of public housing or any community served by Neighborhood House.
  • A high school graduate or GED recipient who plans to pursue an advanced education.
  • Able to demonstrate financial need and that he or she has overcome personal obstacles or hardships.
  • Able to demonstrate a likelihood of success at higher education.
If the recipient earns a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, or is in the top 30% of the student's class, the student will receive the scholarship for a second year (maximum of two years) upon application.

Distribution of scholarship funds:

  • To be used for tuition and books and other hard costs of education.
  • The scholarship funds will be paid directly to the school.
Applications must include:

  • A three-page personal statement describing any personal barriers, obstacles or hardships you have overcome and why you are likely to succeed at higher education
  • Three letters of recommendation, including a letter from a responsible person in the community, a letter from a teacher or instructor if you are currently in school or a professional reference if you are not currently attending school and a personal reference (other than a family member or a Neighborhood House staff member).
  • An official high school or GED transcript (if applicable)
  • An official college transcript (if applicable)
  • A completed scholarship application form
