Neighborhood House and the High Point Neighborhood Center were recently featured in the independent, award-winning magazine Sustainable Industries.
The building is at heart a neighborhood center—it will house critical services for low-income residents of High Point—but at the same time will be an extremely innovative environmentally-friendly building. It will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified and will include a variety of energy-saving technologies such as:
- Solar panels used for passive heating and electricity generation. (To learn more about Neighborhood House’s Solar Panel Challenge, click here.)
- Environmentally responsible materials, such as pre-fabricated panels, recycled steel and lumber, certified wood products and low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints.
- Natural ventilation and shading devices to reduce cooling loads.
- Occupancy and daylight sensors to automatically adjust electrical lighting based on occupancy of rooms and available natural light.
The decision to invest in so many green building measures was based in part on long-term financial implications, the article continues. For example, solar panels have a significant cost up front, but will ultimately save Neighborhood House money in the long run because of significantly lower electrical bills.
