Community care as substance abuse prevention: Challenges of being proactive in a reactive society

October 8, 2021

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month – join staff member Jazmine Chilo as she presents the next Speaker Series event on Thursday, October 28 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Jazmine will be highlighting the trends in substance abuse in the United States, complications specific to low-income communities, harm reduction as a form of treatment, and the obstacle that is our current criminal justice system.

Jazmine Chilo (she/her) joined Neighborhood House in April 2020 as a Community Health Case Manager with Project HANDLE. Currently, she is the co-facilitator of both the Multiracial/Multiethnic Affinity Group and Unapologetically Black Affinity Group. She was born in Duwamish Territory (Seattle, WA) and was raised in Coast Salish Territory (Maple Valley, WA). Jazmine completed her undergrad in Sociology at Western Washington University in 2018, and completed her certificate in Alcohol and Drug Counseling while working as a Substance Use Disorder Professional Trainee in 2019. She is a lifelong learner who is committed to justice and quality care for all marginalized peoples, but especially our relatives experiencing homelessness; those living with a substance use disorder; people who are or have been incarcerated; and individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. In her spare time, Jazmine enjoys writing, baking, watching horror films, and going on walks to look at flowers.
