Lighting
More than 20% of all electricity generated in the U.S. is used for lighting. Approximately half of all this energy is wasted by lighting empty rooms, by using inefficient light bulbs or by poor design.
Everything about the High Point Center has been designed to maximize lighting. The architects employed computer models to orient the building on the site in order to maximize natural sunlight through windows and skylights. Compact fluorescent and ENERGY STAR lighting fixtures use less energy throughout the building.
And the sensors in each room have two parts: one part detects motion and will turn the lights on or off depending on if it senses occupancy; the other part detects sunlight and will automatically dim (or even turn off the lights) if there is enough sunlight.
Did You Know?
- Studies have shown that natural light positively affects people's productivity.
- Outdoor lighting around the High Point Center is shielded downwards (also known as "downlighting") to reduce light pollution.
At Home
Swap your incandescent light bulbs for more efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Just by changing the five highest-use light bulbs in your household you can save $60 per year.
