Reading comes to life at Neighborhood House

The children in Linda Chugani's Head Start classroom proved that a pile of new books is about as irresistible as it gets.

With gusto, they descended on dozens of books donated to Neighborhood House by patrons of Barnes & Noble Booksellers. They also listened and played along as Erin Vargo from Barnes & Noble gave an animated reading of "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type."

The children got to preview the books, including award winners and such childhood classics as "Good Night Moon" and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" during Neighborhood House's Head Start Reading Week in January.

Over the last two years, Barnes & Noble has donated nearly 2,400 books to Neighborhood House through its annual holiday children's book drive.

"Our staff loves the contribution that they can make and that it stays where in our community," Erin says. They not only encourage customers to participate, but often pick a childhood favorite to donate themselves so they can share their love of reading with the kids."
