New Date! 7th Annual Breakfast Event May 14

Van Jones to Deliver Keynote Address at May 14 Breakfast Event

Van Jones, the civil rights activist and founder and president of Green for All, will speak to his vision for social justice in a sustainable future   at the Neighborhood House 7th Annual Breakfast Celebration May 14 — and to how everyone in America can be a part of this revolutionary movement.

Liberation — from the environmental degradation that scars our planet, and from the social inequality that plagues our cities. Van Jones finds a common solution in our effort to free ourselves from these complex and troubling issues. Jones champions green economic development as a means to promote social justice, empower working Americans, and preserve our fragile environment.

By investing in sustainable technologies, building eco-friendly industry and training a green-collar workforce, Jones envisions a revolutionary future — a “green wave, that can lift all boats.”

Keynote speaker Hattie Kauffman  Cultural sharing at breakfast

CBS-TV news correspondent Hattie Kauffman was the keynote speaker May 24 at the Neighborhood House “Next Century of Hope” Breakfast in Seattle, an event that raised $150,000 and drew some 500 supporters.

Kauffman, a former KING-TV reporter who went on to become the first Native American woman to anchor a national television broadcast, spoke about her childhood growing up in West Seattle’s High Point public housing community and the “safety net” provided by Neighborhood House and other organizations.

The event, which was chaired by former Seattle Mayor Norman Rice, also included illuminating cultural displays of life and “immigration paths” from Eastern African and Southeast Asian countries where Neighborhood House’s staff and clients once resided.

Hundreds gathered in late October to celebrate Neighborhood House's 100th anniversary. With guests attired in the finery of their native countries, the evening began with a silent auction and displays of cultural art and lifestyles. After mingling and appetizers, guests progressed to a buffet dinner of foods from countries including Mexico, China, Greece, Egypt and Gambia.

The high point of the evening was a moving and colorful performance by the Apsara Ensemble, a troupe of traditional Cambodian dancers.
