Research Interviewer

Salary Range: Range 21 ($20.11 to $22.31 per hour)
Status: Intermittent, approximately 10-15 hours per week from Feb to July 2010

Neighborhood House Programs
Since 1906, Neighborhood House has been helping diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence, health and community building. Our services include early childhood education (including Head Start and Early Head Start), mentoring and tutoring, emergency referral services, self-sufficiency/employment classes and services (including ESL and citizenship), job placement and training, substance abuse services, transportation and outreach for the elderly and disabled and publication of the Voice newspaper. Annually, Neighborhood House serves over 13,500 individuals. Of those, 80 percent are refugees and immigrants.

Scope
The Be Active Together Project is a community-based participatory research project that seeks to impact the health of the low income, immigrant and refugee communities in and around the High Point and Greenbridge housing communities. The goal is to reduce health disparities by working in partnership with residents and community partners to improve health and physical activities. We promote health through capacity building, community outreach, community-based education and participation in physical activities. Research related activities such as focus groups and interviews are conducted to evaluate the outcomes. As part of this research, we are conducting survey among residents of the Greenbridge and High Point communities in the West Seattle area. The surveys will collect information on general physical activity, self-perceived health, and social interactions. Research Interviewers will conduct surveys in English, Vietnamese and Somali languages with the same cohort in 2010, 2011 and 2012. This five-year project is funded by the National Institute of Health from 2008-2012. This position is located at Neighborhood House Wiley Center.

Responsibilities
  • Attend research and cross-cultural training sessions.
  • Recruit residents to establish appointments for interviews.
  • Follow complex research protocols.
  • Conduct in-person interviews at respondents’ homes in Vietnamese or Somali.
  • Work closely with Project Director to keep track of appointments, completed surveys, quality assurance, and debriefing sessions.
  • Maintain contact logs and records and provide reports in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.A. in public health or a social science. Experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Fluent written and oral bilingual ability in English and Vietnamese or Somali
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Must have reliable, independent transportation for frequent travel between client homes and Neighborhood House offices.
  • Willingness to comply with the established agency performance standards which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, customer service-orientation, embracing a team player orientation, entrepreneurial, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Must pass the Washington State Patrol background check (rechecked every two years).
  • Interviewing or case management experience desired.
