Prevention Coalition Coordinator

Department: Education & Community Services
Reports To: Program Manager, Youth and Health Services
Status: Regular, 30-40 hours per week, 12 months per year
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Hiring Range: 19 ($21.06 to $23.40 per hour)
Location: Rainier Vista

Scope
The Prevention Coordinator is responsible for building and sustaining a community-based prevention coalition in Southeast Seattle (SE Seattle Prevention Education and Action for Community Empowerment (PEACE) Coalition), which includes a focus on Aki Kurose Middle School and vicinity, as well as organizing similar prevention activities throughout SE and SW Seattle and South King County. The Prevention Coordinator provides general oversight for the coalitions’ activities, including needs and resource assessments, planning, delivering, evaluating and reporting. This person will recruit and train coalition members for a minimum of eight representatives from the following sectors: (a) Business; (b) Chemical dependency treatment; (c) Civic/volunteer groups; (d) Healthcare professionals; (e) Law enforcement; (f) Media; (g)
Mental health; (h) Other substance abuse organizations; (i) Parent; (j) Religious/fraternal organizations; (k) School; (l) State/local/tribal government; (m) Youth under age 18; and (n) Youth-serving organizations.
 
The Prevention Coordinator will organize monthly coalition meetings and committee meetings, work with the coalition to conduct a needs/resources assessment, then identify and implement strategies that lead to increased health and sustainable, lasting reductions in substance use/abuse among youth.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a team member of Neighborhood House and partners, including King County, DBHR, Puget Sound Educational Service District, and Seattle Public Schools. Work collaboratively with agency and partners to meet program goals. Report on progress and challenges as required.
  • Continually broaden expertise in prevention, including risk and protective factor model, and serve as a resource person for the community and agency. Provide and conduct reports, literature/resource reviews to identify best practices.
  • Recruit, train and retain members to form a strong, consistent prevention coalition in
  • SE Seattle.
  • Coordinate prevention activities such as: community forums, health fairs, parent presentations, youth prevention clubs, media campaigns and policy change efforts.
  • Implement evidence-based prevention interventions that may include but are not limited to: Parenting Workshops, Youth Workshops, media campaigns, policy change efforts, community outreach and education events/activities, youth leadership and engagement activities/programs, and supporting pro-social activities for youth.
  • Supervise and coordinate other staff, vendors, contract facilitators, and volunteers to implement prevention activities.
  • Collaborate with other local, regional or state coalitions to strengthen local efforts.
  • Assist coalition members in navigating the Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative (CPWI) planning framework (adapted from the Strategic Prevention Framework) and guide coalitions to annually conduct a needs assessment and develop a comprehensive action plan.
  • Coordinate and facilitate coalition meetings and committees and communicate effectively with members and community partners.
  • Maintain coalition documentation, including agendas, supplies/invoices, event activities minutes, bylaws and other documents.
  • Maintain and develop communications tools include websites, social media, email lists, newsletters and flyers.
  • Collaborate with agency leadership, health and education partners, local businesses, community-based organizations, and the media to promote coalition’s mission and goals.
  • Evaluate coalition effectiveness and strategic plan.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with service providers and colleagues.
  • Participate in required CPWI meetings and training events.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers, interns, contract facilitators and other staff as appropriate to assure quality of program.
  • Provide information for development of program budget; monitor supplies and expenses.
  • Assist with identification and acquisition of donations and financial support.
  • Ensure implementation of policies adopted by the Coalition, Neighborhood House, and program funders as appropriate.
  • Ensure that sound health and safety measures are practiced in all activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Health Education, Communications, Social Sciences, or closely related field or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience (professional and/or volunteer) in organizing people to create community change, program coordination, community-based programs involving youth, drug/alcohol/tobacco abuse, or other related community health prevention or counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with children, youth and adults with a variety of needs and from diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and sustain effective relationships with community partners, foster and share leadership among individuals in the community, and build bridges among diverse community members and organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, public speaking and training skills, group and meeting facilitation skills, and organizational skills.
  • Self-starter who learns new concepts quickly, with proven ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Able to creatively solve problems, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of substance abuse prevention and prevention science, community development and mobilization, youth development principles, and community organizing approaches.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
  • Must have completed the SAPST (Substance Abuse Prevention System Training or Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training) or be willing to obtain this training in the first six months of employment.
  • Must have or obtain a Certified Prevention Professional (CPP) credential within 18 months of employment.
  • Must have reliable, independent transportation for frequent last-minute travel between Seattle worksites.
  • Willing to work occasional evening and/or weekend hours with occasional out of area conferences.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency policies and performance standards, which may include productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer services, teamwork and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • First Aid Certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • CPR Certification (within 30 days of hire).
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in working effectively with schools and community based organizations.
  • Public relations, community mobilization and/or marketing skills preferred.
  • Experience in public health, coalition organizing, drug and alcohol prevention, environmental prevention strategies, program administration, policy/planning, or community mobilization preferred.
  • Possesses knowledge of local organizations, services available and the community to be served.
  • Able to demonstrate intimate knowledge of the ethnic communities and community-based groups in SE Seattle, WA.
  • Experience implementing evidence-based prevention programs. Successful experience in program coordination or project planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with applying environmental prevention strategies (policy change, media campaigns, etc.) and the CPWI or SPF planning framework concepts.
  • Experience supervising and supporting other staff or volunteers.
