ESL tutor
Background and Program Scope
Neighborhood House exists to help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence and community building. The Citizenship/ESL Program is a service provided through our Employment and Education Department. The Employment and Education Department encourages the healthy development of children, youth and adults through innovative education programs. The Citizenship/ESL Program serves adult English learners and offers adult clients assistance with the process of naturalization. Services include group citizenship and ESL instruction, and individual tutoring in preparation for the Citizenship Test.
Responsibilities
- Working one-on-one and in small groups during and outside of class
- Helping adults with dictation, pronunciation, conversation and responding to questions
- Coaching on 100 citizenship questions and other citizenship-related topics
- Assisting clients with Application for Naturalization (citizenship)
Qualifications
- Commitment to helping immigrant and refugee people succeed
- Ability to understand, speak, read, or write Asian/Pacific or East African language and English. Vietnamese and/or Khmer (Cambodian) preferred
- Interest in other cultures
- Patience and positive attitude

Timeframe
A commitment of 3-6 months and 1-4 hours per week is preferred for this position. The tutor makes his/her own schedule. Currently, Citizenship/ESL Tutors are needed from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

Volunteers for this position will work in a classroom setting at Park Lake Neighborhood House, White Center. The address is: 10041 - 6th Ave. SW Seattle, WA 98146.
