Program: Youth Empowered w/Leadership Strengths
Title of volunteer position: YELS Volunteer
Number of volunteers requested: 5-10
Goal of position: To provide mentorship to 25-35 multiethnic youth within the structure of youth leadership program. Volunteers will be asked to participate in activities, share their expertise and have fun!
SAMPLE ACTIVITIES:
Join youth in a range of activities including writing circles, theatre improv, discussions, sports, visual art -all from a social justice/anti-oppressive viewpoint. The program meets 3 days a week; one day for HS, one for MS and a day for all-ages.
Opportunities include:
- YUM Cooking Mentor (Part of Teens Leading Change), Youth supported cooking, nutrition and gardening program aimed to develop youth leaders in the High Point Community
- Girls Skateboarding Mentor, Girls leadership and empowerment through skateboarding
- Green Teens/Zoo Crew Mentor (Part of Teens Leading Change), A youth leadership program grounded in environment, community and mentorship.
- TADA Mentor, Youth driven program focused on drug and alcohol prevention
TIMEFRAME: Year round
Length of commitment: Minimum 2 month commitment.
Hours per week: 2/hr weekly minimum
Scheduling: Tuesday - Thursday, 3:30-6pm
Work site: High Point Center, West Seattle
QUALIFICATIONS:
Desire and/or experience working with youth.
Interest in collaboration and facilitation.
Highly positive and enthusiastic style capable of motivating youth.
Desire and commitment to be a good role model and mentor youth in the program.
Ability to articulate the value of education and learning.
BENEFITS:
Hands-on experience working with a group of immigrant and refuge youth, increased awareness of needs of multiethnic youth and develop/improve facilitation skills. Become a part of an arts-based, intergenerational, community social justice oriented youth program. |
