After-school tutor and mentor

Background and Program Scope
Neighborhood House exists to help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence and community building. The tutoring and mentoring program offers academic and personal support to low-income, refugee, and immigrant students. The tutoring program operates in multiple sites in South King County as part of our Family and Social Services Department. The tutoring and mentoring program helps Neighborhood House achieve its mission by assisting young people to realize their academic, social, and creative potential, which is necessary for achieving and maintaining a lifetime of self-sufficiency and financial independence.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to youth ages 8-18.
  • Provide individual assistance with homework.
  • Focus on improving the reading and writing skills of youth at the tutoring center.
  • Help to lead and organize group activities (i.e., playing outside, using computers).
  • Provide occasional supervision during field trips and other outings.
  • Be a source of encouragement for youth by being a good listener.
Qualifications

  • A strong desire to work with kids of all ages.
  • Willingness to work with people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Should possess the following qualities: flexible, reliable, committed and patient.
  • Should be comfortable reading and writing in English at an 8th grade level.

Hours
Neighborhood House tutoring centers ask for a minimum commitment of three months and 2-4 hours per week. Hours are after school and evenings, from 3:30 to 7 p.m., Monday-Thursday.

All volunteers are asked to fill out a Neighborhood House Enrollment Form and a Washington State Patrol background check form, as well as participate in an informal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator and/or a staff supervisor.
